Why New Yorkers choose Roman shades
Soft and tailored
Fabric adds warmth and texture that hard blinds can’t, and makes a room feel finished.
Your style, your fabric
Solid linens, subtle textures or statement patterns. Match your sofa, your bedding or nothing at all.
Pretty and practical
Add a blackout lining and a beautiful shade becomes a bedroom shade that actually blocks the light.
Are Roman shades right for you?
An honest guide. If Roman shades aren’t the best fit, we’ll tell you at your estimate.
Great for
- Bedrooms, with a blackout lining.
- Living and dining rooms that need warmth and texture.
- Prewar and classic interiors.
- Kids’ rooms and nurseries, cordless with blackout lining.
- Adding color or pattern without curtains.
Think twice if
- It’s for a bathroom or kitchen. Fabric holds moisture and grease; faux wood blinds handle it better.
- You want the window fully clear when raised. The folded fabric stacks at the top and covers part of the glass.
- Budget is the priority. Roller shades cost less for a similarly clean look.
Roman shade questions
Can Roman shades be blackout?
Yes. A blackout lining sewn behind the fabric blocks light through the shade. A little light can still get in at the edges, so for the darkest room we may suggest an outside mount.
Roman shades or curtains?
Both bring softness and fabric to a room. Roman shades sit inside or just above the window, so they take up less space and work well over radiators and in small rooms. Drapes frame the window and can make ceilings feel taller. Many rooms use both.
How much space do they take when raised?
The folded fabric stacks at the top of the window, usually several inches deep depending on the shade’s height and fabric. On an outside mount, the stack can sit above the glass so you keep more of the view.
How do I clean Roman shades?
Vacuum them gently with a brush attachment every few weeks. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth. For deeper cleaning, a professional fabric cleaner is safest.
