Why New Yorkers choose roller shades

Clean and minimal

One flat panel of fabric that rolls up out of sight. No slats to dust, no bulk in small rooms.

Glare control, view intact

Solar fabrics soften harsh sun and protect floors and furniture while you still see the city outside.

Easy to motorize

Roller shades are the simplest shade to motorize. Raise and lower them from your phone or a remote.

1. How much light do you want?

SolarCuts glare, keeps the view. Daytime privacy only.

2. Choosing a solar fabric

Solar fabrics are rated by openness: how much of the weave is open. Lower openness means more privacy and glare control; higher means a clearer view.

Are roller shades right for you?

An honest guide. If roller shades aren’t the best fit, we’ll tell you at your estimate.

Great for

  • Living rooms with a view. Solar fabric cuts glare without hiding the city.
  • Home offices. Less screen glare during the day.
  • Bedrooms, with blackout fabric.
  • Large and tall windows, especially motorized.
  • Small or modern spaces that need a clean, minimal look.

Think twice if

  • You want night privacy from solar alone. With lights on inside, solar fabric becomes see-through at night.
  • You need total darkness. Even blackout rollers let a thin line of light in at the edges.
  • You want to tilt light like blinds. Zebra shades or wood blinds do that better.

Roller & solar shade questions

Can people see in through solar shades at night?

Yes. When it’s dark outside and your lights are on, solar fabric becomes see-through. For night privacy, pair a solar shade with a blackout or light-filtering shade, or consider zebra shades. We’ll help you pick the right combination.

Will blackout roller shades make my room completely dark?

The fabric itself blocks light, but a small gap at the edges lets a thin line through. We’ll show you how inside or outside mounting affects that, so your bedroom is as dark as possible.

Can I motorize my roller shades?

Yes. Roller shades are one of the easiest shades to motorize. You can control them from your phone or a remote, and set schedules so they open and close on their own.

How do I clean roller shades?

Dust them with a soft brush or vacuum attachment. For small marks, dab gently with a damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid soaking the fabric.
